Waste Not, Want Not
It’s a first for Copper Island Fine Homes.
Recently, we started construction of a beautiful walkout-basement rancher on the slopes of Anglemont. The building site is an idyllic location, nestled into stands of cedar and fir. But while the trees are beautiful, they also can be potentially dangerous given our warming climate and the ever-growing risk of wildfire.
We’re pleased to say that all, since the devastating wildfires of 2023, all Copper Island Fine Homes clients have been concerned with the risk and are quick to embrace firesmart building techniques and products. But our new Anglemont clients have taken fire awareness and prevention to a new level by asking us to install a 5,000-gallon cistern on their property.
Their reasoning is that such a system will provide an excellent way of watering their future yard with rainwater (which is acknowledged as being much healthier for plants than chlorinated municipal water) while being an independent source of water for fire suppression should the need arise.
The photos above chronicle the installation of the cistern into the backyard during the foundation backfilling process. The tank will be buried deep with only the green lids visible. It will be fed by roof downspouts any time it rains, and will have a submersible pump to supply water for the customer’s garden and landscaping needs. And in the event of a fire, the pump can supply roof sprinklers to keep the entire roof and parts of the yard soaked, with water recirculating back into the gutters and the cistern tank.
While it’s a first for Copper Island, it’s not likely to be last time we do this — in fact, it’s likely to set a precedent, as we already have other clients asking for details about the system.
