Last week, I became a Canadian citizen. Needless to say, it was an incredibly proud moment for me.
My wife Sylvia is Canadian. After we were married, we lived in the United Kingdom for nine years. Then, when our children were young, we decided they would have a better life in Canada. So we moved here in 2011, and it was a great decision — it was quickly apparent that we would enjoy a better standard of living, and our kids would have better opportunities for their futures. We also fell in love with the outdoor Canadian lifestyle, and quickly found Canadians to be friendly and helpful. Having such amazing scenery to explore was an added bonus!
While our first nine years in Canada were spent in Calgary, we always knew we’d like to live in BC one day. Our dream became a reality in 2020, when I accepted the position of General Manager at Copper Island Fine Homes. For me, the Shuswap felt much more like home! I loved having four proper seasons again and living by the lake. We quickly found the local people to be very warm and friendly, and we we found that being in a small, tight-knit community is awesome. In 2021, when the opportunity to purchase Copper Island Fine Homes materialized, Sylvia and I jumped in with both feet, and we haven’t looked back.
We feel very settled here and can’t see ourselves ever moving away. So getting my Canadian citizenship was a logical step. Now that it’s been done, I feel even more connected to this great country! I’m so proud to be a Canadian, and to continue to play some small part in enhancing our local community in the Shuswap by building great homes for the great people who also call the Shuswap home.
