In Scotch Creek, we’re doing a massive renovation and addition on a somewhat dated house. And a massive brick chimney is part of the project.
The chimney is being done by our go-to stonemason, Marcus Buhrig from Marcus Masonry. The photos above give you some sense of the scope of the work. When all the brickwork is installed, Marcus will finish it with a German Schmear, also known as a mortar wash. This involves applying a thin coat of mortar over the surface of the brick, and then “smearing” it off, in order to leave a textured, whitewashed finish behind.
Marcus first achieved the stunning effect for the same clients a couple of years ago. At that time, we were in the process of building them a huge 30 by 40 foot secondary building on the lot, complete with a garage/storage area on the lower floor that has ample room for all of the owners’ vehicles and toys, and a roughly 1,000 square foot suite on the second floor with full bathroom and sundeck overlooking the lake. That building had the same brick motif as a primary part of its exterior finish.
Needless to say, our clients were so pleased with the finished product that they asked us to complete the main house renovation and addition. We’ll be pleased to show you more photos of the work in progress and the final result in future updates.
