Asian fusion is one of the hottest trends in the world of cuisine. But we’re also seeing more Asian finishing trends in some of our projects. Case in point: the fireplace detail in the stunning new build we’re getting closer to wrapping up over in Magna Bay.
The photos above are of the Naguri-style spoon cut carving that our staff finishing carpenter, Chuck Beaton, is completing onsite. Naguri is a traditional Japanese woodworking technique in which the surface of the wood is carved or hammered with a spoon pattern. The distinctive texture has been used for centuries in furniture and building materials in various applications, and it continues to be appreciated today because of its traditional beauty and durability.
In this case, Chuck has incorporated the technique into the hearth and mantle of the fireplace. The wood is sourced from a single tree that we took down on this property at the beginning of the project.
Our next step is to clear coat the hearth and mantle, and then our stonemason will get started on rocking the fireplace.
The same Naguri texture will also be added to the base plate of the interior stair railing. The clients’ son-in-law is the designer on this project, and he gets the credit for coming up with the idea, along with many other unique finishing features on this project, such as a moon gate door. All together, they represent excellent Fusui, the Japanese version of Chinese Feng Shui which strives to create a peaceful “Zen” atmosphere in a home or building.
